Migraine Headache Treatment

A latest study published by New England Journal of Medicine reported that the drugs commonly used in migraine therapy can cause serotonin syndrom, athough the case is still rare. The research team from Georgetown University and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) examine 11 cases of serotonin syndrome related to the use of triptans, the drugs commonly used for migraine therapy.

“Previously, the FDA has been informed that the triptan combined with SSRIs potentially cause serotonin syndrome. In fact, new findings have found that use of triptan alone (without combination) can cause this syndrome,” said the study author, Offie Soldin, who is a professor Oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Serotonin is a hormone that regulates mood or feelings of someone also related to depression and sense of appetite. National Institutes of Health (NIH) the United States to reveal, serotonin syndrome occurs when neurotransmitter serotonin excessive due to using of multiple drugs that affect serotonin level.

For example, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often used in the treatment depression. As for the triptan also increase the availability of serotonin in the body. The symptoms of serotonin syndrome are changes in mood and mental conditions, excessive reflex, muscle cramps, fever, a movement that is not controlled, excessive sweat, nausea or vomiting.

Although this case is rare, the FDA’s Dr. Soldin remind patients to stop consume the migraine medicine if the symptoms worsen.

“If you take the medicine than taste rarity on the muscles, symptoms of mental changes or hyperactive, immediately contact a doctor,” he suggested.

Meanwhile, the neurologist from Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, Mich, Dr. Bruce Silverman revealed that this finding may pay attention. However, he stressed that it is not contra indication effects of triptan.

Many migraine patients get better with these drugs. The cause of syndrome may from external factors, and this research is still early with the number of findings which are very limited.
